How to find the root of truth
I recently had lunch with a long-time friend who was moving across country. After our sandwiches and burgers, the time came for that farewell hug. As we embraced, I felt the tears squeeze out, and I said, “I’m not crying because you’re leaving. I’m crying because, in your leaving, I feel how much I love you.”
Later, I thought about that subtle difference, and how powerful it was to feel that difference. No, it wasn’t her move across country that made me emotional; it wasn’t even that I would miss her. But in the container of her leaving, I felt the depth of my love for her. It moved me. And I cried.
Writing has taught me how to find the root of truth
Through writing, I’ve learned how to go down layer by layer by layer to find the root of truth. So when it came to that moment with my friend, it was a quick and natural progression through all the obvious layers — you’re leaving, you’ll be far away, I’ll miss you — to the bedrock upon which everything is built. “I love you.”
As another diner moved in to snap our picture, the tears on my cheeks were not those of sorrow or loss. They were a reminder of the love that has sustained this friendship for over 30 years — and what a gift this friendship is.
What’s underneath all YOUR layers?
Maybe you’re ready to uncover what’s underneath a long-held belief about yourself or someone else. To step fully into the changes happening in your life. Or to find your own source of forgiveness and self-love.
I’d love to hear from you.
